The eyes of the American Hockey League fell upon Springfield this week for the AHL All-Star festivities, hosted by the Florida Panthers’ minor league affiliate, the Thunderbirds. Among those representing the T-Birds, winger Anthony Greco wowed the home fans with his trial in the “Fastest Lap” competition.
Greco set an AHL record with the time of 13.251 seconds, blowing away the competition and raising eyebrows from NHL media outlets after beating the time Connor McDavid posted this weekend in his own fastest lap at the NHL Skills Competition. Greco beat McDavid’s (13.378) by a slim margin, but being on the same level as a player regarded as the league’s fastest is nothing to scoff at. You can watch Greco’s record setting lap here.
Greco has played exactly one NHL game with the Panthers, which happened to be this season. Although he has struggled to get call-ups to the big squad, he continues to power the Springfield T-Birds with 18 goals, 13 assists, for 33 points in 45 AHL games this season. Greco may not be young enough to consider him a potential future stud, his speed can definitely give him an opportunity to be a serviceable winger someday in the NHL.
Make sure to catch the AHL All-Star game this evening at 7:00pm on NHL Network.
