New Panthers’ Scoreboard Ready To Go For 2013-2014 Season

With the 2012-2013 season already firmly in the rearview of the team, the Florida Panthers made their first big offseason move this past week and it had nothing to do with the roster. While the combined fates of several key players will remain in limbo until free agency begins on July 5th, the Panthers took their first step towards a new look next season when they announced that they would in fact be receiving the public funds needed to bring a new scoreboard to the BB&T Center.

With the motion to give the Panthers money from the Tourist Development Tax’s reserves passing by a vote of 6-2, the powers that be within the Sunrise Sports and Entertainment group turned their attention toward picking the best course of action for their now green-lit project. After a reportedly thorough and aggressive process, it was recently announced that Panasonic Eco Solutions North America had been selected to build and install the new center-hung scoreboard at the BB&T Center.

In a press release from the team, SSE Sr. Vice President Brett Stefansson seemed confident in the effects that this new scoreboard would help not only with the Panthers, but BB&T Center as a whole.

“After an extensive and aggressive process led by Anthony James Partners, we are excited to partner with Panasonic to bring a state-of-the-art scoreboard to the Broward County-owned BB&T Center,” said SSE Sr. Vice President & BB&T Center General Manager Brett Stefansson. “I am confident that this new board will be one of the best and most advanced in North America, while reinventing the in-arena experience for Florida Panthers fans, and guests of the major international events we expect to attract.”

The newly proposed scoreboard will be 30 x 40 feet and was designed by Anthony James Partners. This state-of-the-art project boasts one of the first pitched-forward, 360-degree continuous primary screens in professional sports. The 6mm LED high-definition screens will measure 16-feet high and wrap approximately 168-feet around the scoreboard. Although the scoreboard will be predominantly digital, it will still contain both the BB&T Center and Broward County logos.

The new scoreboard will reportedly be revealed during the Panthers’ first home game of the 2013-2014 season as the team kicks off the celebration of their 20th season in South Florida. In addition to Panthers home games, the new BB&T Scoreboard will play a large role in both concerts, conventions, and other sporting events. These events could potentially include college basketball tournaments, championship boxing, a future NHL All-Star Game, and most notably a chance at an upcoming NHL Draft.

With a projected surge in revenue for Broward County as well as a a better hockey viewing experience for Panthers’ fans, it’s safe to say that this new scoreboard is the first victory in what looks to be another interesting off-season for the Cats.

MacKinnon’s Hat Trick Leads Halifax Over Portland

If you were among the disappointed when the Florida Panthers lost the NHL Draft Lottery and the chance to draft Seth Jones first overall a couple of weeks ago, then the clips below should make you feel a whole lot better. Saturday night, Nathan MacKinnon, expected to be taken by the Panthers second overall in next month’s entry draft, and the Halifax Mooseheads faced off against Jones’ Portland Winterhawks in the Memorial Cup tournament with MacKinnon stealing the spotlight with a second period hat trick in a 7-4 win. To make the hat trick even more impressive, MacKinnon scored three different ways: at even strength, on the power play and short-handed. He’ll be quite the pick for the Panthers if the Colorado Avalanche do indeed take Jones first overall. The 2013 NHL Entry Draft will take place on June 30th in Newark, New Jersey.

If you missed it, NHL Network will be airing the game Sunday Morning at 11am EST. MacKinnon and the Mooseheads will be back in action later on Sunday against the Saskatoon Blades, which will be shown Monday on NHL Network at 1pm EST.
