The San Antonio Rampage were back in action Friday night at the AT&T center for their first match-up against the Grand Rapids Griffins of the season. The Griffins got off to a two goal lead in the first half of the opening period with Brent Raedeke and Trevor Parkes getting the puck past Jacob Markström during the first nine and a half minutes of play. Tyson Strachan and Drew Shore set up Jon Rheault for his first goal as a member of the silver and black and cut the Griffins lead in half heading into the first intermission. Less than five minutes into the second period, Rheault found the back of the net again and tied the game on a Rampage penalty kill with Jean-Francois Jacques in the box for hooking. In the third, defenseman Mike Caruso and forward Scott Timmins set up Eric Selleck for the game winning goal with less than four minutes left in regulation to give the Rampage a 3-2 win.
Sunday night the Rampage took the ice to face one of the most talked about teams in the league– the Oklahoma City Barons. Making its AHL debut was the much anticipated Taylor Hall-Jordan Eberle- Ryan Nugent Hopkins line for the Barons. Both Dov Grumet- Morris and Oklahoma City goaltender Olivier Roy were solid in the first stopping a combined 18 shots. Midway through the second, Rheault and John McFarland set up Alex Petrovic on the power play for his first regular season AHL goal. The Rampage power play struck again late in the third period, this time when Stratchan and McFarland set up defenseman Colby Robak and made the score 2-0. The final buzzer sounded and thanks to solid defensive play the Rampage and Grumet-Morris shut out the Barons and improved their home record to 4-1.
The Rampage have one game this week and that will be Saturday when the Toronto Marlies make their only visit to San Antonio this season. The puck will drop at 7:00 CST at the AT&T Center. San Antonio (4-4-0-1) currently sits in a two-way tie with the Grand Rapid Griffins for 10th place in the AHL’s Western Conference.
